When was the last time someone asked how you were really doing, and not just how the crops look?
This is a heavy topic, but we know there’s weather you can’t control, prices you didn’t set, bills that still have to be paid, and things that follow you home even after the equipment is …shut down for the night. Too many people in agriculture carry all of that alone.
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. According to the American Farm Bureau’s Farm State of Mind campaign, multiple studies show farmers and ranchers die by suicide at 2 to 5 times the national average.
That’s not just a random statistic. That’s your neighbor down the road, somebody’s dad, or the guy in the semi 2 back from you in line at the co-op. So pay attention to the people around you. Maybe their routine has changed or things around the farm have started to slide. Maybe they’ve stopped showing up or answering, or simply don’t seem like themselves.
Ask. You don’t need the perfect words. You don’t need to know how to fix it. Sometimes a simple “Hey, you doing alright?” is enough to open the door.
If you’re the one struggling, asking for help doesn’t make you any less tough, capable, or hardworking. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is recognize when something isn’t right and get someone beside you before it gets worse.
